Government Minister: Gambling Can Enhance Life
A gambling minister has claimed that gambling could be an "enhancement to the quality of life" if it was brought to the mainstream.
Minister for Sport and Gambling Richard Caborn believes that the majority of adults who find enjoyment in gambling should be allowed to carry out their hobby and to place their bets in a well-regulated environment.
His pro-gambling statement drew ire from anti-gaming groups, claiming that the government should be focusing more on the negative effects of the new gambling laws that take on a more relaxed stance.
Caborn spoke at the opening of the Gambling Commission's new Birmingham headquarters. He said: "74 per cent of the nation has gambled. The vast majority of adults want to drink and gamble, and as long as you do not abuse it, it can be an enhancement to the quality of life. That is why it can be brought into the mainstream."
Its also Caborn's view that casino operators and internet gaming sites should adhere to the rules set by the Gambling Commission.
The Gambling Commission is in the position to regulate all gambling in Britain other than the National Lottery and spread betting.
Glasgow recently ranked highly in the Casino Advisory Panel's list for Britain's first super casino, coming second only to the Millennium Dome in London.
