Most Think Prescott Should Quit Over Allegations

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott seems to be in real trouble as nearly three quarters of the public thinks that he should quit.

A new survey has shown that 70 percent of the respondents feel that Prescott should stand down in light of the allegations that he has broken the ministerial code of conduct when he received favors from casino tycoon Philip Anschutz.

The Populus poll also showed that 60 percent of the voters want Prime Minister Tony Blair to give up his post by the end of next year.

And the Populus poll for the Times makes gloomy reading for Blair as well.

The trouble that John Prescott now faces stemmed from his stay in the casino mogul's Colorado estate summer of last year.

Anschutz is the owner of Anschutz Entertainment Group, or AEG, the firm that is bidding for the Millennium Dome to be Britain's first super casino.

According to the survey, only 23 percent of the public and 37 percent of Labour voters believe him innocent and want Prescott to keep on his job.

Prescott has been involved in a number of controversies prior to the casino row. He has been criticized in the recent past for attacking a member of the public for hurling an egg at him, has been involved in a scandalous extra marital affair with his diary secretary and has been reprimanded for playing croquet during working hours.
